Dennis Langlais, the visionary behind the BMX Freestylers Dream Team, based in Orange County, California.

The BMX Freestyler Vision Started Small

“I certainly did not intend to dedicate 35 years to youth enrichment. My initial plan was just one assembly. The students’ response was unlike anything I had witnessed.”

In 1991, Dennis Langlais placed a single quarterpipe into a van and headed to an elementary school in Southern California. The aim was a lunchtime BMX Freestyler display combined with a brief talk on avoiding drugs and standing up to those who bully others.

That initial BMX Freestyler presentation lasted 22 minutes. The 380-student audience listened intently during the crucial message segments and erupted with excitement during the incredible stunts. Three principals attended; all three had booked future dates by week's end.

News traveled in the distinctive way it does among California school administrators: slowly at first, then suddenly gaining widespread traction. Within five years, the initiative had blossomed into a full BMX Freestyler assembly with a custom-designed ramp system, a professional sound setup, and a roster of expert riders who viewed each performance as both entertainment and valuable instruction.

Three and a half decades later, the BMX Freestylers Dream Team has electrified over 3,000 California schools—from vibrant Anaheim playgrounds to bustling San Francisco blacktops. The ramps are now more imposing. The audio system is more powerful. The riders exhibit greater skill. Yet the core principle remains unchanged: memorable stunts for students, paired with vital messages that truly resonate.
